Trout - Guided Fly Fishing

Due to the trout spawning and the eggs hatching Cold Spring Anglers does not guide during the months of November, December, January, February and March. Please fish responsibly by not fishing near spawning fish or wading on the redds.

Legendary Streams

The trout streams flowing through Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley are legendary. Limestone spring creeks, like LeTort Spring Run, are frequently featured in angling literature because great anglers like Ed Shenk, Ed Koch, and the late Charlie Fox and Vince Marinaro developed fly patterns and fishing techniques on them that changed fly fishing forever. Others, like Big Spring Creek, have earned their reputations for extremely productive year around fishing.

The Fish

The trout, especially the brown trout, offer a unique angling challenge. They're wary, wise, and extremely strong. Many anglers dream of landing one of these special trout. We can help make that dream come true.

Our Guides

Our experienced guides love fly fishing, and enjoy showing others the methods they use to fool streamwise trout. But, the emphasis is on you; we want you to have a great time and catch fish. We'll schedule trips for one or two anglers per guide to fish the "hottest" streams. Or, if your prefer, we have a special "get acquainted" trip that combines a tour of the streams with a half day of fishing.

All trips are walk-trips. Transportation is provided. Lunch is included on full day trips. A typical lunch may consist of a large deli sandwich (turkey, ham, or roast beef) on a Kaiser roll, chips, fruit salad, and cookies. Lunches are eaten along the stream. Water and soft drinks are provided. All trips are "catch and release".

What to Bring

We recommend 3- to 5-weight rods for all our trips. You should have polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and a fishing hat or cap. Rain wear is a good idea too. We recommend breathable waist high or chest waders year around. Felt soles are a must!

Anglers traveling without tackle can rent a flyfishing outfit, waders, boots, etc.

Flies, licenses, and tackle (i.e., everything you will need for your trip) are available in our large, well-stocked fly shop.

Our Season

Our season normally starts in March and continues through October.

March fishing can be some of the best of the season. Black stoneflies hatch on most warm afternoons. Caddis flies hatching on the Yellow Breeches produce outstanding wet fly fishing.

April and May fishing is good everywhere. A typical day might find us fishing Clark's Creek in the day and, in May, a sulphur hatch on the LeTort in the evening.

By June, terrestrials become the most used patterns in our fly boxes. Sulphur hatches may continue early in the month; the Trico spinner falls may start by June 25th.

July and August mornings are usually devoted to Trico spinner falls. We'll often spend lazy afternoons fishing to trout sipping small terrestrials along a shady cliff on the Yellow Breeches. The White Fly hatch creates late-evening excitement on the Yellow Breeches in late August.

September and October bring cooler air and water temperatures -- and super fishing! Dry fly fishing on the Yellow Breeches is superb, and the Trico spinner fall continues on the lower LeTort until the first heavy freeze. The scenery is breathtaking!

Spring (March, April and May) and Fall (September and October) trips leave the shop at 9 AM and return around 5 PM. Summertime trips (June through August) leave the shop at 8 AM and get back at 4 PM. Extended evening fishing, essential for Sulphurs (May-June) and the White Flies (August), can be added to your day. Half-day trips are about 4 hours long, and can be arranged to fit your schedule.
